From the Collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France
c. 1600-1700, France.
Very little is known about Nicolas Lagneau’s real identity: he is recognised only by the artistic genius of his drawings, which, from early in his life earned him the recognition of many important European collectors as one of the greatest draughtsmen of his era, whose distinctive use of pastels and blending techniques, brought out features, flesh tones and expressions.
