Armand Avril
1926, Lyon – 2025, Brignoles, Var, France
Armand Avril was a shepherd in Provence and then a labourer in Villeurbanne. He taught himself to paint using oils on paper before branching out into eclectic assemblages and layered compositions. An unclassifiable, multi-talented artist, deeply inspired by African art, he bequeathed a prolific, colourful body of work in which magical rites poked fun at death and where poetry vies with humour.
