Germaine Richier
1902, Grans Provence – 1959, Montpellier.
This major figure of 20th century sculpture bequeathed a body of drawings that has been unjustly overlooked. Leaving academic drawing behind, she explored fissures and disproportionality through fragmented and hybrid figures, developing a personal mythology in which the boundaries between surface and volume and inside and outside were eliminated. She is one of the few artists who during her lifetime enjoyed a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
