Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes
1884, Montpellier – 1974 Saint-Jennet, near Nice.
From his adolescence onwards, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes studied philosophy, composed symphonies and operas and produced his first paintings. Throughout his life he remained faithful to the Dadaist principal that only the moment of creative expression matters, refusing to exhibit his paintings and only allowing his poems to be published in magazines. After the Liberation of France, he settled with his second wife in Provence. This period marked his return to drawing—until his death, he produced surprising portraits of trees in the South of France, drawn with a fine pen, whose hyperrealism bordered on the fantastical.
