Louis Soutter
Louis Soutter
1871, Morges – 1942, Ballaigues, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland
Le Corbusier’s cousin, taught the violin by Eugène Ysaÿe, Louis Soutter moved on to drawing and painting in 1895, studying in Paris before teaching in the USA. Repudiated by his wife in 1903, he returned to Switzerland and lived as a vagabond. In 1923, his family had him committed to a nursing home for the elderly, where he produced most of his works. Around 1937, suffering from declining eyesight, he painted agitated and surreal scenes mainly with his fingers. This simplicity of means only enhances their extreme richness.
