Jean Tinguely

Jean Tinguely 1925, Fribourg – 1991, Bern. He grew up in Basel, where he developed an interest in fine arts as well as philosophy, history and art history. After settling in Paris, Jean Tinguely made dynamics the leitmotif of his creations, revolutionising sculpture by creating autonomous machines from recycled objects, which were capable of producing series of paintings. Together with Niki de Saint Phalle, whom he married in 1971, he created, amongst other works, the Stravinsky Fountain in Paris and The Cyclop in Milly-la-Foret, a monumental mechanical sculpture that is now part of the national heritage.
