Espace Van Gogh

The Hôtel-Dieu, built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries during a period of prosperity and modernisation in Arles, upheld a tradition of hospital care that was already well established. The hospital was expanded in the nineteenth century following a terrible cholera epidemic. Vincent Van Gogh made some brief stays there and portrayed it in several of his paintings. Today, the Espace Van Gogh is a thriving cultural hub of the city housing the library, the municipal archives, a branch of Aix-Marseille University, and the International College of Literary Translators (CITL).
