Louise Michel
Louise Michel
1830, Haute-Marne – 1905, Marseille.
Most of the drawings by this leading figure of the Paris Commune and anarchism date from the period she was deported to New Caledonia, from 1873 to 1880. Here seascapes and volcanic landscapes, mostly woodcuts, bear witness to the strength of character of this extraordinary woman, who, even when in exile and faced with the torment of hard labour, managed to preserve her love of beauty and generosity of spirit towards others.
